The most common form of modification for proteins in the secretory pathway is N-glycosilation. In this process, a sugar of 14 units is attached en bloc to the nascent protein, and successively modified to control the correct folding of the protein. The biosynthesis of this 14 units N-glycan precursor is well conserved from bacterias to humans, and almost all the genes in this pathway are associated with diseases. This pathway is well annotated in KEGG (http://www.genome.jp/dbget-bin/show_pathway?hsa00510), and some genes involved have been curated on wikigenes (http://www.wikigenes.org).
