Interleukin-6 belongs to a family of cytokines which includes IL-11, ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotropin-1, cardiotrophin-like cytokine, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and Oncostatin M. IL-6 signals through a ternary receptor complex consisting of IL-6 receptor alpha (IL6RA) and a homodimer of the signal transducing receptor gp130. IL-6 stimulates the association of IL6RA to gp130, which then activates the Jak/STAT, Ras/Raf/MAPK and PI 3-kinase signaling modules.
