Wishlist:Betalain Biosynthesis

Betalain biosynthesis, in contrast to Anthocyanin biosynthesis, is limited to the plant order carophyllids. The interest in betalain biosynthesis as food supplements is increasing but the pathway and its regulation not understood in much detail. Since the pathway is not existent in Arabidopsis or Rice, I would suggest a member of the Caryophyllids to the list of available organisms. I suggest pitaya (Hylocereus ployrhizus), since I am working on it.
